School Curriculum

​

The Maine State Ballet's School for the Performing Arts offers instruction in classical ballet, Broadway style jazz, and tap to students ages 3 and up.  Advanced ballet students have the unique opportunity to be trained in the Balanchine Technique® and Balanchine Style®.

Classical Ballet
​

Ballet is the foundation of all forms of dance combining grace, flexibility, and strength.  The school offers a complete classical ballet program beginning at grade one and progressing to pointe, variations, and partnering for advanced and professional dancers.  Must be in grade 1 and up to register.

Tap Technique
​

We offer classes for students grades 4 and up, beginner through advanced.  These consist of a full hour of tap technique, incorporating style, upper body, rhythm, precision work, and line work.  Must be in grade 4 and up to register.

Jazz Technique
​

We offer classes for students grades 4 and up, beginner through advanced.  A fast pace and contemporary rhythms make this course appealing for any age group.  Emphasis is on Broadway show style.  Must be in grade 4 and up to register.

Tap/Jazz Combination
​

Our students in grades 1-3 have the option of taking this combination class.  Basic technique in both disciplines is taught.  Recital dance is a tap dance in black tap shoes.  Must be in grades 1-3 to register.

Music and Movement (Age 3)
​

An active class for three year olds, involving games, songs, rhythm, music, and fun.  An introduction to dance and creative movement for the very young dance enthusiast.  The course normally runs for 8 weeks.  There are several  throughout the year.  Must be age 3 by start of session.  No recital.

First Steps (Age 4)
​

Pre-K students enjoy this exposure to dance fundamentals, rhythm exercises and games.

Must be age 4 by October 15th to register.

Kindergarten Dance
​

This class introduces students to tap, jazz and ballet in an atmosphere of fun.  Recital dance is a tap dance with black tap shoes.  Must be in kindergarten to register.
