July 7, 2009 -Aspiring choreographers to showcase new works at Maine State Ballet

Falmouth, Maine - Twelve regional choreographers will present original dance works on July 16 and 17 at the Maine State Ballet Theater. The showcased pieces will reflect a diversity of styles from modern dance to classical ballet.

White Mountain Dance Ensemble - Anne Skidmore PhotographyMaine State Ballet Artistic Director Linda MacArthur Miele looks forward to the opportunity for others to stage their pieces. "Having our in-house theater gives us the ability to sponsor aspiring choreographers and to create an event for them to present new work with no production costs. Part of Maine State Ballet's mission is to foster and collaborate with area dance groups. For our first Choreographer's Showcase, we have asked a few of the dance companies with which we have partnered in the past year. We hope to expand this event to include more of the region's dance community each summer."

Dancers participating in the Showcase are from Androscoggin Dance in Lewiston, the Miami City Ballet, the Neoteric Dance Collaborative from the seacoast area of New Hampshire, the White Mountain Dance Ensemble based in Mt. Washington Valley, New Hampshire, as well as Maine State Ballet. The accompanying music will range from Mozart and Mendelssohn to Gershwin to Marvin Gaye.

Maine State Ballet alumni join the cast as choreographers and dancers in several numbers. Miami City Ballet company dancers and twins, Leigh and Sara Esty, are former Maine State Ballet students who return home to Gorham during their summer layoff to train with Artistic Director Miele. Gretchen Brown of the White Mountain Dance Ensemble danced for Maine State Ballet for ten years before turning her focus to family life in western Maine and her modern dance talents.

Two 7:00pm performances of the Choreographer's Showcase are scheduled Thursday, July 16 and Friday, July 17 at the Maine State Ballet Theater, 348 U.S. Route One, Falmouth. Tickets are priced at $12. Seating is limited so reservations are suggested. Call 207.781.7672. For more information see www.mainestateballet.org.
